On March 28, 2011, the federal government formally inaugurated
registration of Suscriber Identification Model (SIM) card for mobile
phone users. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) secured
6 billion naira from the National Assembly to carry out the registration
exercise.
The purpose of the exercise is for Nigeria to have a central
biometric-backed database for all mobile phone users in Nigeria. This database would
form an important tool, a pool of data that will assist agencies
of government, especially the security agencies, and the National
Identity Management Commission in carrying out their jobs in the
national interest.
Mobile phone users are to register their SIMS with their
network providers or with NCC appointed SIM card registration agents
nationwide. |
